Gotham (FOX Monday 8pm)

Ok, I’m going to lay it on the line – I’m a Bat Geek. I love (almost) everything associated with Batman, so naturally I’ve been pumped about this show since I read about it during Pilot Season. How did it live up to my own self imposed hype?….

I LOVED IT! Yup, I said it. I loved Gotham.

For anyone not up to speed, Gotham takes place when Bruce Wayne is a child, and Commissioner Gordon has just started at the GCPD.

Now this show faced a lot of skepticism going into premiere week “How can you tell a story about a story that’s not happened yet?”, “They’re missing the best bit!”, “Bold move, not having Batman in it”… and so on, and I personally thought  it was all a little unfair. Not all great shows read great on paper. I was skeptical of Bates Motel when it was first reported on, and that has turned out to be one of my must see shows! So don’t judge a show by it’s hastily written pitch on an industry site.  But to satisfy the critics, no Gotham doesn’t take us on Bruce Wayne’s journey – we know his journey –  but it does take us through the city, and centers on the people that live in it, corrupt it, and try to save it. I mean, the show is called Gotham after all, not Baby Batman.

I think this show hits the mark on pretty much everything. It keeps true to the Batman/Gotham world with its tone, and look, but still manages to have enough substance to keep you interested without the Caped Crusader jumping out from the dark corners. The only real complaint I have is some of the questionable camera angle choices, but we can work on that right guys?

To conclude, I’m excited about this show, and unlike SHIELD last year, I’m still excited about this show even after seeing the pilot, so to everyone who is dubious about it I’d say – give it a chance. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised, and I feel it’s just worth it to watch Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot – he steals the show for me.

My Prediction: This show should have no problem seeing out the season.
