My Love Letter To AMC

Dear AMC,

I FRIGGIN LOVE YOU!

Today, it was announced that you will no longer be pursuing the Reality Show avenue of shows, and as a television lover, a would be TV writer, and most of all – as a person with any sense of creativity and morality – I THANK YOU!

Thank you for being the first network to put your foot down, and say enough is enough! When you’ve made a name for yourself making shows such as Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Mad Men you don’t need to rely on the horrible world of unscripted fare.

Do let me clarify though, when I use the term reality show I know it encompasses a pretty large spectrum – and not all of it is bad. AMC, your shows were actually the few exceptions to the rule, I love Comic Book Men, and I’m also not adverse to a great episode of Storage Wars, American Pickers, or Jarrod and Brandi on A&E. What I despise are the would be stars, and fifteen minutes of fame seeking assholes like the Kardashians, Hiltons, and anything labeled a Real Housewife. Why are you on my television? What is your purpose? And how do I get rid of you? And it’s those types of shows that give reality a bad name.

More annoying, if that’s possible, than the socialite laden reality scene is television’s recent dependency on them. Networks see them as cheap, quick ways to fill a time slot, and yes – you do need some variety on the airwaves – all I ask is that it takes the form of something entertaining, not just out right repulsive – which many of these shows are.

As someone who desperately wants to be in this industry because I love television, I love writing, and I love the art of it all, I say thank you for bringing more opportunities to people like me.

In conclusion AMC, thank you for being great. Thank you for (hopefully) starting a trend, and thank you for getting back to what television should be – a place of great story telling.

You are truly living up to your Network slogan “Something More”.

Big hugs and love,

All The Writers In The World.
