Seth Meyers is the Nightly Hero We All Need

For the past several years late night has been a wasteland of beer pong antics and super safe celebs regaling stories of normality (they are just like us. Awwww.) – and up until recently that was suffice. For those of us who wanted a bit more we could always rely on John Oliver showing up once a week to rip shit out of whatever was going on in the world, or Thunder Cunt (Twitter’s words, not mine) Samantha Bee to bring down the house of ‘da man’. But the world around us has changed dramatically and while the other nightly hosts have remained in their safe haven of desk bits and rap battles Meyers has transformed into a political pundit and marched Late Night into a Trump world with force, humor and many, many swear words.

Borrowing from his SNL Weekend Update experience Meyers quickly became the nightly go to during the interminable shit show that was the election by challenging the thoughts and ideals of Washington with his (almost daily) segment “A Closer Look”.  And now, in a post-inauguration world Seth and company continue to hit this administration full throttle; dismantling Tweets, interviews and sound bites in a furry of disdain, common sense and f-bombs. Couple the astute writing with Seth’s dead pan delivery and trust me, we have our selves a new Jon Stewart in the making.  Is he as visceral as Jon Stewart? No. But let’s not forget  Jon wasn’t as visceral when he first started. Give him time. He’s already at a higher level then Stewart replacement Trevor Noah, and is taking caring of business the way we thought Stephen Colbert would have.

Don’t let time slots fool you because even though Jimmy Fallon is currently NBC’s golden boy, Seth Meyers is establishing himself as the voice of network late night.  He is our touchstone of sanity in this otherwise glib landscape.

Late Night with Seth Meyers airs Weekdays at 12:30/11:30c on NBC
