Social TV: How Marketers Can Reach and Engage Audiences by Connecting Television to the Web, Social Media, and Mobile

This right here will prove what a television geek I am. I read this book and loved it.

It’s Social TV: How Marketers Can Reach and Engage Audiences by Connecting Television to the Web, Social Media, and Mobile by MIKE PROULX and STACEY SHEPATIN and I highly recommend it if you’re into the whole ratings thing.

While this book doesn’t go into great detail about the Nielsen ratings, it does talk about the connection the audience has via social media to shows and what an impact that can have on ratings. Basically using it as the second screen, and this is a topic I feel networks and studios need to take more seriously. There’s a difference between setting up social media page for your show and actually doing something worth while with it, and trust me – it’s not all about Facebook anymore. Or, at all really.

NBC is a great example of integrating social media and online exclusives through it’s extensive library of webisodes and by having all of their shows in high profile on social media such as Twitter and Instagram. Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well, it is and the difference it can make is astounding. Fans can interact with the stars, and writers of their favorite shows, vote online during live events such as The Emmys, and above all else – give you free advertising. Hello! This is a gold mine networks, get on board! Trust me when I say there’s nothing more powerful than a fan with a social media account- you only have to look at something like tumblr (especially my tumblr) to see this.

Okay, enough of my ramblings, because I could talk about this stuff all day. I’ll just say it again – I recommend this book a lot.

It’s available on Amazon in both hard cover and Kindle formats, so get reading.

For anyone interested, Nielsen does a weekly TV Tweet Ratings you can find that HERE
