Must Watch Halloween Television: Part Three

Even though they only did one Halloween episode in their five year run, Newsradio still made one of my all time favorites. Like ever! EVER! EVER! EVER!

Halloween – Season 3, Episode 5

The staff are upset when Mr James doesn’t invite them to his annual Halloween party because they think they’re too cool to dress up and Lisa volunteers Dave to wear “the most outrageous costume ever” to get them into the party spirit.

Newsradio was always on point with it’s writing and this episode is just full of amazing tid bits. Hearing what the staff went as to the party last year “Joe stood on his tippy toes, and came as Joe’s older, taller brother. What about Bill? Last year he came as ‘man without socks'”. Genius, pure genius. This episode makes me laugh from the very first beat to the end credits.

When Dave arrives to the party as….. yes, a woman, clearly a nod to Dave Foley’s past show – The Kids In The Hall,  my comedy girl heart sings for joy! Adding to the hilarity is Lisa’s (the diviiiiiine Maura Tierney) reaction to his costume.. simply “you’re wearing MY dress”. Yup, she’s upset because Dave rocks that dress better than she thinks she ever could, and you know what? He probably rocks that dress better than anyone could!

Everyone on the team comes suitably costumed, and it’s a delight to see what these odd ball characters come as.  ” ….Little Devil, Alien Autopsy Coroner, Queen of England…. Gay Construction Worker…” it’s even more of a delight to see Phil Hartman’s Bill MacNeil really go for the drama when a psychic tells him he only has 36 more years to live.  Yeah you read that correctly, 36 years. I don’t have to tell you Phil was a master of the subtle art of comedy. Just with an expression, or inflection in his voice you automatically start crying with laughter, and this episode is such a brilliant example of that so please add it to your must watch list.
