Red Band Society (FOX Wednesday at 9pm)

FOX’s new teeny drama premiered this week, and you know what? I didn’t hate it.

The show centers around a group of teens living at a Los Angeles’ Ocean Park Children’s Hospital , and deals with their sickness – some physical and some emotional/mental – and how they cope with each other and the staff.

I know what you’re thinking –  kids, sickness, hospital? That sounds depressing, right? Yes, and no. There are moments of tear-jerking drama, in the pilot we meet a family-less teen who is about to under go leg amputation to save his life,  but for the most part – it’s quite light hearted.  Picture The Breakfast Club meets Grey’s Anatomy.

Is this show perfect? Absolutely not. The plot device of having the kid in a coma being our narrator seems a bit hokey and convenient, but I’m willing to let it slide just to see where this show goes. Both the writing and acting, especially by a number of the teens, more than makes up for the few flaws that many critics have already pointed out, and Octavia Spence is in it – so do we need much else?

To get to the point, I like this show. In a season that seems poised to be disastrous in terms of new shows – this is a MASSIVE beam of hope.

I reckon it will be a slow burner in terms of ratings, but if FOX is willing to stick with it and let it find it’s feet, and audience – I strongly believe they have the new Glee on their hands.

Now, on to what you guys think? Did you like it? Love it? Loathe it? Get in touch, and let me know.
