Well, I’m just going to get right to it. This show is wicked awesome!
Set in 1942 Agent Carter (Hayley Attwell) returns home from war and finds her self marginalized at the Strategic Scientific Reserve – performing administrative duties by day and performing espionage by night for an old friend – Howard Stark.
Now before you’re put off by anything I can assure you – you don’t have to be a comic book reader, Marvel Fanboy/girl, or even know the slightest about the Captain America world to watch this show – it’s just a really kick ass spy show. Yes, there are references the fans will get, but I dare say it won’t ruin the experience for anyone not comic book inclined.
The two hour premiere on Tuesday, unfortunately, didn’t garner as much attention or ratings as it’s wow factor cousin, SHIELD – which upsets me greatly. Remember how excited you were for SHIELD before it started? Me too. Remember how let down you were with SHIELD after several episodes? Me too. You won’t get this with Carter. Shhh – I know! Only two of it’s eight episode run has aired so far, but what can I say? I’m dying to watch again next week. I didn’ say that about SHIELD…. like, ever.
Attwell turns in a righteous performance as the woman herself, and she fits so perfectly into the 1940’s persona – which on a personal note, is my favorite time period of clothes, art, and architecture so I’m so jealous she can pull off that look. The writing is both thrilling, and, at times, a bit hokey. We know Agent Carter is going to get away from the bad guys- but who cares? It’s a fun filled ride while it’s going on! Enjoy it! Agent Carter is to the Marvel world, what Gotham is to the DC world – a boat load of fun brought to you from a different perspective!
To sum it all up, all I can say is if you were turned off the Marvel TV franchise by that other Marvel show, please give this one a chance. You won’t be disappointed. And if you are. I’ll start watching SHIELD again. Deal?
