Conviction (Mondays 10pm ABC)

conviction-hayley-atwell-poster-jpgABC’s latest drama-soap, soapra? Is that a word? It can be now. Anyway, the latest soapra finds Hayley Atwell starring as Hayes Morrison, a brilliant young attorney – and the daughter of a former president, taking on a job at the Conviction Integrity Unit to avoid her cocaine scandal coming to light.

While an interesting premise,  the lawyers are tasked with going through old cases and challenging what they feel is a wrongful conviction, the show just rings of typical network drama. Sorry – soapra. And we all know how I feel about those….

Atwell herself is great, as usual, but I can’t help but long for the days of her ass kicking, fedora wearing bad-ass alter-ego Peggy Carter. See people, this is why we can’t have nice things on TV. No one watches them! Ugh!

The pilot does it’s best to lay the ground work for what is possibly to come, but also tries to cram in a shit tonne of info that I don’t feel was needed at this point in the series. And yes, I know. Pilots are tough. I get that, but as a writer you also have to decide what is imperative for people to know NOW! Set up your surroundings, and characters and let the rest flow naturally…. this one I’m afraid just feels a tad bit forced.

None the less, Conviction is not the worst thing on television, no where near it in fact, and chances are I’ll wade through a few more episodes just for the sake of Hayley… but I wanted this show to be so much more. I wanted to love it. I wanted to sing it’s praises but… I can’t. I can only say if you like the usual ABC drama fare, you’ll probably really enjoy Conviction – but for anyone who knows what Hayley Atwell can really do, you’ll just feel she’s wasted. So, so wasted.

Come back Peggy! Pllllleeeeeeease!!!!!
