I actually held out a bit of hope for this series as I was a huge fan of Kevin James’ first show – The King of Queens, and after watching the pilot I realize lighting, or good writing, doesn’t strike twice.
James stars as Kevin Gable, a recent retiree from the police force who has visions of turning his retirement years into a string of leisure activities and buddy-buddy drinking sessions. Oh boy was he wrong! It turns out his wife Donna, Erinn Hayes, has been hiding all sorts of family problems from Kevin. his eldest daughter wants to drop out off college (gasp!), his middle kid is having school troubles (woah!) and his youngest is a hypocondriac (wait..what?). Yeah apparently a lot of shit has been going down in the Gable house, and I know cops have busy schedules and all – but was Kevin even present in these kids’ lives? How do you miss a pre-teen hypocondriac? I can spot one with one Facebook post….
Anyways, Kevin realizes his dreams of a fun packed, responsibility free retirement are out the window.. and oh how we laughed. Actually, no I didn’t laugh once. Kevin Can Wait is the very definition of a CBS sitcom, over laugh-tracked, over-hyped, and way way under-funny. A few people from The King of Queens that have made the jump to this new show I can ensure you that not a single one of them is a writer, either that or we know who was keeping Queens alive – and it wasn’t Kevin James.
I’m all for having more comedies on the air, especially muti-cam comedies since it seems to be a dying art form, but Kevin Can Wait is the reason so many people hate them. In fact I think CBS is hell bent on making the multi-cam comedies something to loathe – and is really doing well in destroying the genre. But hey, what do I know? Kevin premiered strong and is currently the highest rated new comedy on the air… other people don’t seem to have the same problem with CBS’ comedies as me…
To sum it all up, Kevin can keep waiting. Forever. Perhaps in a dark basement, away from anything television related.
