Midseason: Where Have All The Shows Gone?

Seriously television, what gives. Normally come January I’m knee deep in shows to watch, but this year you’ve given me…. like what? Four? Well, either way here’s my thoughts so far on them.

Agent Carter (Tuesdays 9pm ABC): I’ve already written a review of this show, begging people to watch it’s magnificance. You can find that right here.

Empire (Wednesday 9pm FOX): WOAH! If you’re not watching this show, please run to your television now and set the DVR. As we all know, I’m rather a hard person to get into drama – mainly because they’re all the same. Cop Procedural, Cop Procedural, Medical Drama, Cop Prodcedural…. WE GET IT! There’s gonnna be a Guest Star, and they’re either going to be the killer, or they’re going to die. LET’S MOVE ON.

Well FOX did, with Empire which centers around Lucious Lyon, the CEO of Empire Entertainment, and a tough ruler and someone that has never been challenged. Until he recieves a medical diagonsis that predicts he’ll be incapacitated within a few years. Enter everyone trying to take over the rulers thrown.

This is a fantastic show, mostly because it’s different. It’s not something we’ve seen on TV before, but also because it’s fucking entertaining. Like cliff hanger, I need to know what happens NOW entertaining. I don’t want to give much more away, so I’ll just say please watch this show. Not that it really needs to the help – it’s crushing all ratings records since it’s premiere. (And on a personal note I’ll just point out this was Kevin Reilly decision – so let’s throw a little thanks his way FOX for making you relevant again!)

Fresh Off The Boat (Tuesdays 8pm ABC): Based on Eddie Huang’s book of the same title, FOTB tells the story of Eddie, who along with his family relocates to suburban white hell – Orlando, Florida – from Washington DC’s Chinatown district.

Yeah, it’s a fish out of water scenerio again. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, or this show. I didn’t hate, nor love FOTB, I just thought it was okay. ABC premiered it with two episodes on a Wednesday night, and really that’s all I felt the need to watch. Perhaps I’ll go back to it in a few months, to see if it’s found it’s own voice, but other than that – there really isn’t anything to say.

The Odd Couple (Thursdays 8:30 CBS):  Sweet fuck. TV, look. I get it. You’re struggling. But you know what, instead of rehashing decades old shows in hope they’ll find the an audience – why don’t you take a risk and do something completely new (see Empire review above). Having said that though, this is a CBS show, so I’m no doubt preaching to a half asleep, deaf, waiting for their nap time choir.

Okay, right to it. Yes this is based off the show from the 70’s of the same title, and the play of the same title, from even earlier than that. Matt Perry (yes, we’re still trying to make him work) stars as Oscar (the disheveled one), and Tom Lennon as Felix (the neat, uptight one) and how they have to move in together following their divorces. Yeah, I know. I got bored writing that synopsis.

Was it as dire as you’re imagining? Yes. Yes it was. It was your typical CBS sitcom with overbearing laugh track, over acting actors, and not one damn thing that’s actually funny. But hey, it premiered big (3.1/10) sandwiched between BBT and the series finale of Two and a Half Men (Halle-fucking-lujah) so it’ll probably see at least a season – so really, what the hell do I know?

Better Call Saul has also premiered this month, but I feel that gem deserves its own post. Oh man…

Hope this all helps you plan your viewing a bit better. Let me know what you think of the shows so far..
