Must Watch Halloween Television: Part One

Anyone who knows me knows my favorite holiday of them all is Halloween! I live for Halloween, I even got married on Halloween and since today is the first of October I thought it would be a great opportunity to celebrate All Hallows’ Eve…. and television. This blog is about television after all. So through out the month I’ll be writing about my favorite episodes from shows both present and past… so let the spooky, scary – mostly funny, times begin.

First up has to be pretty much any Halloween episode of Roseanne.

This show had a real knack for holiday episodes, because their Christmas ones weren’t too shabby either, but the particular stand outs for me were the annual Halloween episodes that started in the show’s second season and ran until their final year.

My faves of the bunch:

“BOO!” – Season 2, Episode 7

Roseanne does her best to scare Dan who is waiting to hear about an important business deal, to prove she is the Halloween champ. This Connor family also put together their own Haunted House for trick or treaters.

I always remember wanting to be a part of the Connor family since they did Halloween so well.. but did anyone else wonder – did they seriously do that Haunted House bit for EVERY kid that came by? What happened if the doorbell went again when they were half way through? And DJ was answering the door… didn’t he get to go trick or treating?

“TRICK OR TREAT” – Season 3, Episode 7

On their way to the Lodge Halloween party, Jackie and Roseanne, who is in costume as a man, get a flat tire and are forced to take refuge at the Logo Lounge, and DJ chooses to be a witch instead of something more boy-ish – much to Dan’s chagrin.

“TRICK ME UP, TRICK ME DOWN” – Season 4, Episode 6

By far my favorite of them all! Roseanne follows her neighbor Kathy Bowman around the Lodge Halloween party, convinced she’s planning a prank to get back at her for an earlier prank, and Jackie starts flirting with an unkown man in a moose costume – who turns out to be Booker.

This episode was also the first time we see Dan and Roseanne’s epic Halloween costumes, and again, it made me envious they weren’t my parents because anyone that spends hundreds of dollars on a costume needs to be in my family!

“HALLOWEEN IV” – Season 5, Episode 7

Missing Becky, Roseanne has lost her Halloween spirit and refuses to go the Lodge party, and while everyone is away celebrating her favorite holiday without her she is visited by the ghosts of Halloween Past, Present and Future.

This episode stands out in my memory for two reasons. 1) A pre-Less Than Pefect Sara Rue playing a teenage Roseanne to PERFECTION and 2) Roseanne’s Statue of Liberty costume that she wears to the Lodge after the Ghosts convince her she is missed….

I need that costume!

Roseanne did several more Halloween episodes over the years, and they were all fun.. well except the last season – nothing about that season was good, but these are among my must watch for the Pumpkin season.

Stay tuned for more editions of this coming up….
