*** Contains Spoilers, Read At Your Own Risk ***
So it’s been nearly two weeks since The Gilmore Girls revival hit Netflix, and many people had chimed in with their reviews and thoughts on the updated state of Stars Hollow. The biggest topic of conversation has turned to Rory, the littlest Gilmore and the life choices and overall opinion of her. Being a die hard of the show since it began I figured I’d throw my two cents in…
The Rory Debate
I’ll be honest. I never really cared about Rory. Yes she was about my age, and yes we went through a lot of the same experiences – and by that I mean she had a parent, went to school and had big dreams. That’s where it ended though; I never felt a connection to this character for the majority of the series. She was just there for me, and I think the biggest block in this relationship was there was no real risk in her life. I can’t relate to that. I don’t think anyone can. We all have taken a risk on something, whether it be on a job, a boyfriend/girlfriend or an experience — there’s been a risk involved. There has been a thought of “if this goes tits up – I’m screwed”. Rory was never screwed. She had Loralei who was there to back her up, and she had two rich grandparents that would do whatever they needed to do to see her succeed or get out of whatever little hiccup has hit her almost perfect life.
In all the articles I’ve read recently about Rory, no one has mentioned the fact that this girl didn’t have to work for shit. And I mean that literally. She NEVER had a part time job – okay, briefly she was a lunch room card swiper but that story only lasted what? An episode? She never spent the summers toiling in retail, or bussing tables. She spent her summers going shopping with her mom, or hoping across Europe. TWICE. Who gets to do that?!?!
This coddled upbringing came to the forefront in the latest series when we learned Rory was unemployed, and no longer living her dream. She could have though. My word, the last time we saw her she was off to cover the Obama campaign…. – what happened? Too many cross Atlantic trips to see Logan?
Ugh, Rory you’re a waste of script space my dear and this revival only shed more light on the fact that you are an over priveleged, little tart that could have done everything she wanted. I can only imagine what I could accomplish at your age had I been given half the chances you got.
*** I would like to point out though that I love you Alexis – it’s not personal.
Okay, now that I’ve got that off my chest I can only say great things about this revival. It left me in a happy place seeing Luke and Lorelai finally getting married. Finally making it official and give us the story book ending we all wanted in season 7. And it’s ALWAYS a pleasure to have Paris (Liza Weil) back in any capacity, and I think this revival gave us a great twist on where Paris’ life ended up. It wasn’t an obvious choice, but at the same time didn’t feel at all out of character.
Of course no Gilmore Girls revival article can be complete without mentioning the now famous ending. The three words that Amy Sherman Palladino had envisioned for the show from day one.
“Mom, I’m pregnant.”
I must admit, these words would have had more of an impact back in the day when Rory was a fresh Yale grad. Seeing her say them as a thirty-something just makes me think “okay….” Probably not the reaction ASP had in mind, but none the less I’m happy she was finally able to reveal to the world her final thoughts for our precious girls.
Many have speculated with the success of this revivial there will be more, and the final words certainly open up that scope but I can honestly say – leave it alone. Let it go now. We went out on a pretty decent high, and really what more can be said?
So here’s to Stars Hollow, one of my favorite fictional places ever.
