For fuck’s sake television we’ve had this talk before – ENOUGH with the medical dramas. I know you love them, but it was old ten years ago… *sigh*
So yeah, anyway you want a review…
The Good Doctor has Freddie Highmore playing Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and Savant syndrome who after saving the life of a young boy in an airport is recruited to work at a prestigious hospital in San Jose.
Now medical dramas grate on my nerves, but character driven stories win me over every time and after reading the synopsis of this show I was very, very intrigued. It has the potential to be very good… no wait, HAD the potential to be very good. It’s a shame no one knew how to execute this show properly. Or get decent actors (apart from Highmore who is flawless as always), or write convincing dialogue, or realistic events.
Everything about The Good Doctor is a waste, especially Freddie. After coming off a career defining role as a young Normal Bates in Bates Motel I can understand why he would been drawn to this project. He is a wonderful actor capable of saying so much with just a look, and that plays well for the Murphy character, but someone at some point MUST have said – this is absolute horse shit. Why are you doing it?? I openly laughed out loud at several points in the show, the other half of the time was spent rolling my eyes at the down right terrible acting and amateur dialogue. Is repeating conversations a new trend in television I wasn’t aware of? If so it needs to fucking end.
Out of loyalty to Freddie I will give this show one more episode but if things haven’t improved I’m out and will pray to the TV Gods that he finds a project worthy of him.
The Verdict: If you like medical dramas, give it a watch. If you’re a Freddie Highmore fan, give it a watch – just don’t say I didn’t warn you. And this is gone by mid season.
The Good Doctor premieres September 25th at 10pm on ABC
